The 8 Most Popular Kitchen Cabinet Paint Colours of 2022

Aside from being the functional and familial hub of the house, the kitchen is also the room that can set the theme for the entire home.

One of the most important things in the kitchen is the cabinets.

They define the very core aesthetic and ambiance of a kitchen. Even with varying materials and styles, the cabinet colour can make a huge difference in what your kitchen will feel like as a whole.

In 2022 we’re seeing a lot of classic neutrals carry us through with some more trendy pops of colour. So, if you’re looking for some inspiration or a revamp, you’re in the right place!

Here are the 8 most popular kitchen cabinet paint colours we expect to see in 2022:

1. Classic White

Why white? No surprises here. Timeless and understated, there’s a certain sophistication that can only be achieved with white cabinets. They don’t just give you that magazine-spread aesthetic, but are also a fantastic way to make a small kitchen feel breezy and airy.

How to style? White kitchen cabinets are also very classy and they tend to pair well with most countertop and backsplash finishes. Wooden countertops and white cabinets pair especially well, but you can also go a bit eclectic with something bold and colourful. White cabinets and teal backsplash tiles look fun and quirky while something like a New York subway tile can give the kitchen an edgy industrial look.

Recommended shade: Simply White Benjamin Moore

2. Beige

Beige kitchen cabinets

Why beige? Beige is a classic neutral shade and has been a popular colour to dress up kitchens within 2021 that will continue into 2022. It exudes an understated charisma that is excellent for emulating a sense of grounding within a constantly thriving space like a kitchen. Moreover, they’re perfect for adding depth while keeping the ambiance airy and refined.

How to style? Beige kitchens pair well with white finishes, gilded hardware, as well as rustic knick-knacks like chics, distressed wood trays, wicker baskets, etc. Pro tip: beige kitchen cabinets stand out fantastically against espresso coloured wooden floors.

3. Grey

Why grey? If understated neutrals are your thing, then you’ll hop right on aboard the grey kitchen cabinet trend of 2022. The timeless beauty and neutral appeal of this colour make it a highly sophisticated and warm choice. It’s a top trending hue because of its universal appeal and how it can contribute to your kitchen’s traditional ambiance.

How to style? Grey colour is perhaps one of the easiest to style because of its timelessness. It goes well with white countertops (think: synthetic quartz with small grains) as well as upscale textures like white marble. If you want a more rustic look, then you can also pair your grey cabinets with warm wood tones (think: butcher’s block countertops, wicker hand towel baskets, lovely distressed wood trays, etc.).

4. Sage Green

Why green? Earthy and healing, sage green has a distinct natural appeal that homeowners love emulating in their kitchens. This is why it is going to be one of the best trending kitchen cabinet paint colours of 2022. Charming and really easy on the eyes, this particular colour can make your entire kitchen feel absolutely refreshing while adding a distinct personality to the entire ambiance.

How to style? Sage is a rather understated shade of green, so you need to pair it with textures that will make it pop. A white backdrop can certainly stage it in a breezy way, but if you want a bit of homeliness in the mix, then you can also pair it with exposed bricks, subway tile backsplashes, and gentle wooden accents that add to the natural beauty of this colour.

Recommended Shade: Pigeon by Farrow and Ball or Nantucket Grey by Benjamin Moore

5. Mustard Going Saffron

Why mustard? While homeowners have been experimenting with citrus shades all through 2021, the general consensus is that rich mustards and saffrons are going to be a big hit in 2022. They adhere to the “bright” side of the spectrum without being too overwhelmingly eye-catching.

How to style?

Since these cabinet paint colours are bright to begin with, it’s best that you style them with dull and dark shades of grey. Slate-hued backsplashes and brass hardware would go really well with them. You can also bring in the occasional distressed wood tertiary accent (think: rattan or wooden bar stools) to ground the ambiance even more.

Recommended Shade: Babouche by Farrow & Ball or Stuart Gold by Benjamin Moore

6. Inky & Ocean Blues

Martin Made Design Company

Why blues? The deep, irchly decadent beauty of dark blue cabinets is unparalleled, as shown by the fact that it was one of the top trending colours in the genre for 2021. Indigo, Midnight and Yale blue are definitely the top choices in the market because of their cool richness. Then there’s the breezy ocean blue that’s used in Hamptons and Coastal style homes.

How to style? Once again, since it’s the darker shades of blue that are going to be popular choices for 2022, it’s best that you pair them with golden hardware and handles. To soften the whole ambiance, you can pair them with creamy white or textured backsplashes and countertops (think: white anthracite marble, white quartz, etc.). As for ocean blue, you can pair it with sandy runners, wooden floors, and white countertops to recreate the beachside vibe.

7. Black

Why black? As more and more people are leaning towards a stylish contemporary look, black has emerged as another top contender for cabinet paint colours in 2022. The sheer impact of this hue is not lost on anyone, it’s definitely the best choice if you want a statement-worthy kitchen.

How to style? This colour especially pairs well with shaker style cabinet doors and golden handles. To balance the boldness of the black you could pair such cabinets with white countertops and backsplashes. However, if your kitchen is large enough and boasts an airy open concept floor plan, then you can also match them with slate hued or wooden countertops/backsplashes.

Recommended Shade: Onyx by Benjamin Moore

8. Blush Pink

Why blush pink? Bright and airy, this pastel shade of pink is reminiscent of French rococo mansions and is quickly becoming one of our favourite upcoming trends in 2022. This iteration is called “blush” or “millennial” pink and is perfect for making a kitchen feel airy and beautiful.

How to style? This particular shade of pink is quite light, so there’s a bunch of options. You can go full-on “breezy” and opt for white countertops or contrast with a dark blue backsplash to give a cozy, inviting feel. A touch of white, glass-paned cabinet in the middle would go a long way towards adding a 50s Americana vibe to the whole mix. If you’re a fan of wood, then always choose lighter shades like oak.

Recommended Shade: Bashful by Benjamin Moore

1940’s Renovation Mood Board – Kitchen

The kitchen.

The hub of the home, where everyone gathers.

It can be used to set the theme of your entire space so it is important to take some time and make sure you get it right.

So here’s the Mood Board that I created to bring the design to life:

The two features I wanted to accentuate in this kitchen were: the brick fireplace and the exposed beams.

When selecting the cabinet colours, a modern stark white didn’t feel right for this home.  It needed something that felt comfortable, soothing, welcoming and natural.

I had 4 different options picked out:

  1. Clary Sage Sherwin Williams
  2. Wethersfield Moss Benjamin Moore
  3. Rosemary Sprig Benjamin Moore
  4. Nantucket Gray Benjamin Moore

Green kitchen cabinet colours

If you’re picking a colour for your cabinets that you’ve never seen in person before… I HIGHLY recommend spending the money to buy the paint samples and actually test them in your space.

Before painting the samples I was 99% sure I was going with Clary Sage.

After painting the samples I was 100% sure I was NOT going with Clary Sage.

It is a beautiful colour but much brighter than what I was going for in this space.

The winner after much debate was Nantucket Grey by Benjamin Moore.

To balance the green we used Simply White by Benjamin Moore on the uppers.

Countertop:

The Quartz countertop we went with was called Ocean Foam from Horizon Laminates.  It was a nice crisp white with a very slight greig tone throughout.

Lighting:

Over the kitchen sink we used two black sconce lights with gold accents to compliment the cabinet hardware.

On the ceiling we used shiplap from Kent and painted it Simply White to match the rest of the room and cabinets.

We refinished the beams in the kitchen with a dark wood stain to really make them pop against the white ceiling.

The Backsplash:

Lastly for the flooring, we tried as best we could to match with the original hardwood throughout the rest of the home.
